James Harris Jr. and Russ Redhead were friendly adversaries in pool halls around Maryland and Pennsylvania, but their rivalry took a turn for the worse at a tournament in Las Vegas a decade ago with accusations of cheating and unkind words. It took a long time to repair their relationship. A couple of years ago Harris got sick and was in need of frequent dialysis treatments. Redhead discovered Harris needed a healthy kidney so he got tested and found out he was an excellent match. When Redhead was asked why he did this, here is what he said, “The way I was raised, when you can do something for someone, you just do it. Except for the recovery time, this wasn’t going to affect me. Do I really need two kidneys when I can save a friend’s life with one?” They both say that their friendly rivalry at the pool table will continue, but this story is a reminder that friendship trumps rivalry.
