A Good Neighbor

Patricia Nieshoff was feeling alone while sitting at the hospital. Her three-year-old son, Edward, just experienced a seizure and was off getting a bunch of tests.  Patricia had no family nearby, and she was scared.  As she sat there, thoughts went through her head about what comes next, and she had a sense that she was alone. It was not a good place to be, she admits all these years later. But only about an hour after that, a neighbor showed up.  It was Chris from across the street. He noticed that her front door was left open, so he went in and grabbed Patricia’s wallet, keys and phone. Then he grabbed one of her son’s stuffed animals and started calling local hospitals to figure out where Edward had been admitted. Patricia said she practically flung herself at him and burst into tears. His small gesture of care and concern vividly sticks with her 18 years later.  Patricia said she is immensely grateful that people like Chris exist in the world.  We are too.
