Feeding Their Community

Lauren and Nelson Saravia and their 4-year-old daughter, Izzy, lived in a cozy home in Altadena, California.  That is, before the devastating wildfires in early January.  They evacuated as the fire approached and, days later, received the heartbreaking news that their house didn’t survive the flames.  The Saravia family also own a food truck. Lauren received a phone call from a deputy at the L.A County Sheriff’s Department in Altadena telling her that first responders were working 24-hour shifts, and they were hungry. She only asked one question.  What time is the dinner shift? The Saravia’s food truck partnered with World Central Kitchen to provide meals to those battling the fires and those, like them, who lost almost everything they own. Lauren, Nelson, and Izzy have dealt with their sudden loss in different ways, but they are constantly reminded they are not alone as they figure out what comes next.  Nelson is particularly pragmatic.  He says, “I just like to focus on counting my blessings because if you focus on counting the things that you miss, you will never stop. It’s a loop that you will never be able to escape.” Click the link below to read more about how this family is feeding their community . . . in more ways than one.
