Anyone who has been in Arizona for a bit knows that hiking in the summer is a really dangerous activity. Nobody knows that more than Colt Johnson and John Zeto Jr. In May 2024, Colt Johnson, a 27-year-old from Idaho, nearly died while hiking alone in Arizona’s Superstition Mountains during extreme heat. Retired firefighter, John Zeto Jr., who had recently moved to Arizona, heard the distress shots, found Colt barely conscious, gave him water and electrolytes, and carried him several miles to safety. Since the dramatic rescue, Johnson and Zeto have formed a lasting friendship, and their story has recently been in the news. Zeto, now passionate about trail rescue, continues to help hikers in need. Their story is told in two parts. Use the links below for today’s Story of Joy.
