Lest we think plagues are just something we read about in the Bible, the town of Enterprise, Alabama experienced a Biblical infestation of boll weevil insects up close and personal in the early 1900s. The bugs destroyed everything in their path, including the local cotton crop. But instead of hiding away this difficult and destructive history, the town has decided to lean into their ingenuity during difficult times. The town erected a monument to the beetle to celebrate the town’s ability endure in the midst of adversity. The mayor says, “If we look at it now, it was just something that made us move in another direction in a better way.” All over town there are “weevil stops” that mark the past and show the ways the town moved forward in spite of horrible circumstances.
