Protecting the Land

New Zealand is taking a unique approach to protecting sacred lands. Taranaki Maunga, formerly known as Mount Egmont, has recently been granted legal personhood, meaning it has rights similar to a person. This legislation passed by New Zealand Parliament made between the government and local Māori tribes, ensures that Taranaki Maunga will be co-managed by Māori tribes and the government. This legal status will protect the mountain from environmental harm and acknowledges Māori rights and their connection to the land. Click the link below to read more about the agreement.
